Vegas Vibes: Learning and Living in the City of Lights
They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but when it comes to professional development and memorable experiences, some stories are worth sharing. I recently returned from my third trip to Las Vegas for the National Auction Association (NAA) Designation Academy, and each visit reveals new layers of this fascinating city.
This year, I found myself at the historic Horseshoe Hotel, where the NFR's mini shopping experience was set up. My room came with an unexpectedly luxurious surprise – an oversized bathtub that felt like a mini spa retreat after long days of learning. While my room was comfortably smoke-free, stepping into the casino was like traveling back in time. Despite Nevada's progressive stance on many things, the familiar scent of cigarette smoke wafting through the gaming floor reminded me that some Vegas traditions remain unchanged.
The city's culinary scene continues to be a highlight. I sampled dishes at several renowned establishments, including the romantic Eiffel Tower Restaurant, Gordon Ramsay's burger joint, and Wahlburgers. While the food was exceptional, I couldn't help but notice the steadily climbing prices since my first visit in 2019. A simple fountain drink now commands a steep $7.50 – quite the shock for someone used to Rhodes 101's $1.50 sodas back home in Southern Illinois! Pro tip for future visitors: make a quick run to CVS or Walgreens for your beverage needs. Your wallet will thank you.
One of the most striking additions to the Vegas skyline is The Sphere, an architectural marvel that's already on my must-visit list for next year. I also made time to see the Bellagio's Christmas display, though the experience highlighted an interesting social phenomenon. As crowds jostled for the perfect photo or video angle, I found myself thinking about Seth Godin's "Purple Cow." The famous Bellagio fountains, once a show-stopping attraction that would halt foot traffic, now seem to blend into the background for many passersby. It's a stark reminder of how quickly the extraordinary can become ordinary in our social media-saturated world.
Sometimes the most meaningful moments come unexpectedly. Running into fellow Union County residents at a Vegas hotel led to a spontaneous hug – something that would feel out of place back home but seemed perfectly natural in the surreal environment of Las Vegas. They were there for an Eagles concert, while I was immersed in auction education, but that brief connection felt special.
Despite being in the entertainment capital of the world, my focus remained primarily on professional development. I've yet to try my luck at the gaming tables, and this year, medication restricted me to just one celebratory drink. However, I more than made up for it by sampling every snack available during our training sessions!
The NAA Designation Academy continues to provide valuable education and networking opportunities. While last week's blog touched on the technical aspects of the program, the overall experience deserves its own spotlight. Vegas might be known for its excesses, but for many professionals like myself, it's also a place of growth, learning, and unexpected connections.
As I reflect on this trip, I'm struck by how Las Vegas manages to maintain its ability to surprise, even on my third visit. Whether it's through innovative architecture like The Sphere, world-class dining experiences, or chance encounters with familiar faces, the city continues to offer new perspectives and memories. While what happens in Vegas might stay in Vegas, the knowledge and connections we build there ripple far beyond the city limits.
